Summer School Information
SBISD HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER PROGRAM:
The high school summer school program offers a variety of classes for original credit or retake credit. For Credit Recovery, students will participate in either standard summer school or the EOC program depending on their EOC scores and final grade. Grade level counselors will make that determination when registering.
Please go to the SBISD Website and look for Summer School or try and click here.
An email regarding summer school was sent on 03/21.17 through Skyward. If you did not receive the email, please check your settings/email address in Skyward.
A note about taking Summer School:
The grade earned while in Summer School is considered a Non-Traditional Credit. Therefore, the grade received in the class taken during Summer School IS NOT AVERAGED INTO YOUR GPA. The class will show up on the students transcript as a credit earned and WILL COUNT TOWARD the 26 state credits needed to graduate (if the class is not a local credit). There is no weight given to a grade done in a Non-Traditional Credit.
Taking classes that are NOT through SBISD:
A student can earn credit for a Summer School class by taking the class through another State of Texas school district, or at another State of Texas Accredited School. Some of those accredited school include, but are possible suggestions and are not limited to or exclusive to the following and are not required:
The Tenney School
Memorial Private High School
UT Online High School (Assignments would be email to the professor at UT and all coursework and instruction is done through the online program. The final exam would be taken at SHS in early August.)
All of these above mentioned examples are fee based and are subject to personal enrollment and use of funds. While these are suggestions of places that are acceptable for credit, it is not stated here as a required place to achieve credit.
If you choose to take a class outside of SBISD:
An approval process will be put in place. Please notify Mr. Rutland, ([email protected]) our Registrar and person who appoints credits. This includes any paperwork that needs to be signed or request for any type of school records.
For students currently enrolled in Algebra I and Biology I (Grade Level and PAP):
If you are in Algebra I, this year (Freshman year) it is strongly suggested that a student complete Geometry before being able to enroll in Chemistry I PAP and GL.
The reason for this is that the science in Chemistry I needs the pre-req of the math in Geometry to be successful. Additionally, the math that is in Chemistry I is supported by the math in Algebra II. The purpose of this is to provide a student with a solid opportunity to be successful in both classes.
Therefore, if Geometry is not completed prior to being in the sequence to taking Chemistry I, a student is strongly advised to enroll in IPC (Integrated Chemistry and Physics) or Environmental Systems which are only offered in Grade Level (there is NO PAP for this class). Please refer to the Enrollment PowerPoint in the Course Selection Tab of this website.
There are very few exceptions to this sequence and those would require advisement from the counselor and the math and science department. If you have already taken IPC in Middle School or Jr High, please contact Ms. Bishop.
It is advised, that if a student is good in math, to take Geometry in the summer before taking Chemistry I. This is not required, but a suggestion in order to be able to advance during Sophomore year in the science classes.
If a student chooses to take Geometry and Chemistry (GL or PAP) their Sophomore year, then you run the risk of not having all material learned before taking Chemistry I. This recommendation is per the SHS Science Department and Math Department. In the Program of Studies is additional information. Again, there are very few exceptions to this sequence and will need a conference with the Math and Science teachers.
An explanation per the Science Department about the completion of Geometry before Chemistry I:
The complex math required by Chemistry is concurrent with what they will learn in Algebra II- therefore they must be enrolled in Algebra II in order to take any level of chemistry.
PreAP Physics regularly uses skills developed in Pre-Calculus, so students in PreAP Physics are required to be taking (or have already taken) Pre-Calculus.
