Courses and Changes:
Please understand that the State of Texas is constantly reviewing and adding information that needs to be updated, therefore changes are inevitable to courses or sequencing of endorsements. ***There is always the possibility that a course will not be offered due to various reasons or that Endorsements/Pathways have requirement changes. Every effort will be made to ensure continued student success. It will be a collective effort. *** There will be a 3 total mail outs, between now and the end of May 2017, with course selections listed, that will go directly to the address listed in Skyward. If you have not received the course request change form, then please review your address listed in Skyward and provide the SHS Registrar with an updated Proof of Residency. Changes to any course selections will not be completed unless the form that is sent home is fill out with the changes and is returned to Ms. Bishop via email, fax to the front office, or being received in the grade level office. Enrollment: Enrollment Power Point shown to all students before enrolling for Sophomore Year You can see exactly what was shown to every Freshman and how the courses are selected, including the course sequence for the 4 core subjects (ie the order that Math classes are taken). Please see email under the Communication Tab dated 02.07.2017 for information on changing any classes once enrollment is completed. Additionally there is information what to do if you missed the date of enrollment for your social studies class. Program of Studies: 2017-2018 High School Programs of Studies link ***Note that there may be some differences between the course selection booklet and the Program of Studies Guide. The overriding process is what is included in the District approval of the Program of Studies. The only reason for an inconsistency would be due to the time of printing of the booklet and the release of the Program of Studies. Every effort will be made to ensure that any changes are communicated to the students and any corrections completed. This will be a collective effort.*** Additional Information For Enrollment: Coursework Requirements per 19 TAC Chapter 74, Subchapter B Foundation Graduation Plan and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) All High School Programs Effective 8/22/2016 Endorsement/Pathways - All offered at SHS as of 01/17/2017 Important Notes For Enrollment: *Future Athletes: Your sport will take two places in your 8 course slots. There is only one exception, Team Tennis. If the sport is a 'cut sport' the coach will email the counselor and changes to a students schedule will be done by the counselor. ** Guthrie Center Courses: take two places, meaning two class periods on a student’s schedule. ***GT students will not be able to choose GT at the time of scheduling and must choose the PreAP section. As of December 2016, GT notations on report cards/progress reports, and schedules will not be noted, nor will there be a specific course that is GT labeled offerred anymore. Upon graduation, it will be noted on offical records that a student was GT identified. If you wish to no longer take a GT course, a waiver must be applied for through the GT Director Amy Ellington. Changes to GT courses will only be done upon verification by the GT Director to the counselor. ****Changing of Electives: Due to scheduling conflicts and class capacity, electives may be subject to change. While this is not ideal, we will work to ensure you/your student has a full schedule with many opportunities.*** *****Change of Course Request Form: if you fill out a change of course request form, there is no guarantee of any course request being granted due to the following reasons: administrative decision, class not making, priority given to upper class students especially if graduation is on the line, and/or the class becoming full before the May/June change window or the summer break.*** It is my goal to provide opportunities for students, but there are times that courses cannot be changed or that the student may not be able to take the course at the desired time. The course is not out of the question, just the timing may not be right. ******A student is free to choose to enroll in the classes they want at the time of enrollment. *******Pre-requesites: There are pre-requisites set for classes and that counselors advise based on those pre-requisites; some pre-requisites or sequencing of classes, are also set forth by the State of Texas and counselors will advise based on those standards. Therefore, any choice to go beyond the advice given by any counselor on campus is a student centered choice and especially if the counselor as advised differently. If student researches and finds out entry criteria of a desired college/university that goes beyond the SHS sequencing of classes, it is again the responsibility of the SHS student to relay/present that information to the counselor and that information will be kept with the counselor as a part of the discussion. ******A student is free to choose to enroll in the classes they want at the time of enrollment. Any correspondence about courses or sequencing of courses that go beyond the advisement of the counselor such as emails or date of phone conversation/meeting and any written information from those meetings, will be retained by the counselor. Any correspondence will not be a part of a students permanent record or transcript. |
